Garden Update June 08

So, the garden is now largely planted (at least for the year). One order from Bluestone Perennials, one from Gilbert H Wild for daylillies, and one from David Austen for two roses (one of which has gone belly up, which is actually quite a trick for a plant, because, well...they ain't got no belly).

So, 6 weeks after the last pictures, here is Haggenwyn Farms.

For the newbies here, this is why our house is called Haggenwyn Farms.

Hope you like it. I sure do.

Garden April 08

After much consternation, and the lanscapers not really getting the idea behind the boulder wall at first...and leaving the pulled out trees...and other headaches the Gardens were installed in the front.
Here are shots before and after mulching. I installed the walls myself (just dry-stacked) out of one pallet of Germantown Schist. 3 yards of black mulch. As you can see, the Roses have turned into a Shakespeare garden. More on that in the June Update.

In the back, I put in a garden to back the wall next to the patio. Into this I transplanted the two azaleas that were just sitting in the ground (hardly planted) next to the shed. They were just blooming and I was worried, but they ended up doing great. That garden is also being planted with herbs, lavender, thyme, and rosemary. Which will give us something nice after the azaleas are done blooming. Erica's cut garden is exactly that, only annuals.

Boulder Wall Done

The boulder wall was finished today.

Very Nice. Of course those boxwoods now have to go... We have decided that the Red Twig Dogwood will go in this garden, near to the wall. The japanese maple will go in the "bump out". The two rhodos from the "fugly" garden will be moved by the A/C Fence.

Oh frabjous joy...

The North Gardens Plans

This is the general shape of the new gardens. Along the garden in front of the garage, currently there are two azaleas, a boxwood, and a barberry. Along the front windows are big old boxwoods. The boxwoods stay for this year....barely. In the above picture, each square is one foot (and everything is to scale-ish). Bottom is North, left if east. Tell me what you think should go where.

The Gardens of Haggenwyn Farms....The Beginning

Haggenwyn Farms has seen a real emergence the past few days. Last Saturday we had trees installed in the back yard. All of the trees in out yard, and many of the plants, are planted in memory/celebration of beloved members of our family and places we have lived . In the southwest corner, by the playset is a Metasequoia glyptostroboides 'Ogon' Gold Rush. Here modeled by Gardener Ben. This tree is planted in honor of my father.

Going north along the fenceline, we next have a Southern Magnolia 'Edith Bogue'. This tree is in memory of the wonderful two years we lived in Athens, Georgia.
On the most northern part of the western fence, is Crabapple 'Purple Prince'. (Warning: pdf data sheet here.) This tree is planted in memory of our house in Indianapolis. The crabapple there was just outside the dining room window where we could watch the birds in the tree and the the bird feeders.

Between the deck and the patio, lies Magnolia 'Jane'. This tree is for my daughter, Lilith Jane. (Don't worry, Ben has a peony in his name, and a Hemerocallis).

In the front yard, the beds are being put in today...
The Japanese Maple tucked by door will be moved. Originally, I thought into the rounded part of this new garden. Now, I am thinking into the old fugly garden, which I will then grow the grass into.
This side garden is more than likely going to be daylillies, daisies, coneflowers, and the like. I will grow some sort of vines up the fence around the A/C unit.

Where that spruce will no longer be, I have a red twig Dogwood. That is in memory of Clara, Clyde's mother.

Tomorrow they are coming back to finish this and install the boulder wall.
